Obituary
EDWARD R. ZWICKER, 92, of Turtle Lake, died on October 15, 2009, at the Turtle Lake Community Center, Turtle Lake. Services will be held at 10:30 AM CDT, Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at the Turtle Lake Methodist Church, Turtle Lake, with Rev. Marvin Winstryg officiating. Military Rites provided by the American Legion Post 133 of Turtle Lake. Burial will be held at 2:00 PM CDT at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, ND.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 9:00 PM CDT Monday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, ND.
Edward Reinhold Zwicker was born on May 9, 1917, one of seven children born to Elizabeth (Bastian) and Gottfried Zwicker on the family farm in Coleharbor, ND. As a young man he operated heavy equipment in Peoria, IL, and was drafted into the navy during WWII. He continued that work in the Asiatic Pacific and was discharged in June, 1946. He returned to Peoria, IL where he met Mary Goble Mitchell. They married in 1950, and resided in Turtle Lake, ND. Edward co-owned and operated Zwicker Motor Co. with his brother, Reinhold. He had two children, Victoria and Brian.
In 1962, the family moved to the Chicago area where Edward worked as a welder for Allis Chalmers, a company which manufactured Pullman coach railroad cars. Mary died in 1978. Ed married Sylvia Brittan on October 4, 1980. After his retirement, the two resided in Turtle Lake, ND. Ed volunteered at the Senior Center and was a member of the American Legion.
Edward is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Turtle Lake; her daughters, Valerie Besserud of Minot and Sharon Weible of Turtle Lake; step-granddaughters, Heidi Quinn and Tammy Anderson of Turtle Lake; seven step-great-grandchildren, Logan, Brady, Zachary and Matthew Quinn, Blake, Brooklynn and Bo Anderson. Ed's children, Elaine Nyquist of Romeoville, IL, Victoria Whitman of Ilwaco, WA, Brian Zwicker of Steger, IL; his grandchildren, Earlie Sinders of Greenwood, IN, James Nyquist of Pompano Beach, FL, Samantha Greek of Plainfield, IL; his siblings, Elmer Zwicker of Bismarck, Ruth Brandt of Tucson, AZ, Elsie D'Aurora of Follansbe, WV, & Dorothy Bettenhausen of Cambria, CA; three great-grandchildren, Brandon and Trevor Greek, & Cassandra Whitman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary; one brother, Reinhold; & one sister Clara.
