Obituary

Edward Dale Sundby died August 16, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota under the care of Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake with Pastor Sondra Krogstad officiating. Interment will be held in St. Olaf Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Turtle Lake with military rites provided by the Turtle Lake American Legion. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Edward was born on October 22, 1922, the ninth child of Ole O. Sundby and Hannah Dahlstrom Sundby. He was raised on the farm that his parents homesteaded on Crooked Lake near Turtle Lake, North Dakota. He graduated from High School in Turtle Lake in 1940 and went on to the University of North Dakota where he graduated in 1944 with Bachelor of Science Degrees in History and Political Science, with a minor in English. After graduating, he enlisted in the Army on June 30, 1944 and served in the 28th Division 110th Infantry Regiment, known as the Bloody Bucket Division, as a rifleman, machine gunner and mortar man.  In World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and Ed was proud to tell you that he was a decorated combat veteran! He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unity Badge, Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars and 1 Overseas Service Bar. He was honorably discharged on May 3, 1946.

Following his tour of duty, Ed received a Fulbright Scholarship and continued his education, obtaining a Masters Degree at the University of Stockholm. While in Stockholm, Ed connected with many of his mother's family members remaining in Sweden. From there, he pursued a PhD from the University of Missouri Journalism School. Upon returning to North Dakota he acquired a teaching certificate and taught school for a number of years. Eventually he joined the Carpenters Union and expressed his creativity in carpentry work. A lifelong resident of North Dakota, he lived off the "normal" social grid. If he hadn't been seen for a while, one could usually find him at the public library in either Fargo or Bismarck reading newspapers and magazines to keep up on local and world affairs. He loved conversation with other Veterans and locals. He never married. Ed's last residence was downtown Fargo, at The 400, where he loved to sit outside and watch the world go by.

Edward Sundby was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Herman (Alice), Arthur, LeRoy (Carol), and Orville (Mary) Sundby, Clara Harmon (Miles), Olga Westmiller (Walter), Eleanor Rutka (Sigurt), Mary Keith (Cyrus), and Esther Larson (Duane). He is survived by one sister-in-law, Carol Sundby, and many nieces, nephews and their families.
