Edith (Burgum) Sheldon, 94, formerly of Washburn, ND died March 6, 2019 at St. Vincent's – A Prospera Community, Bismarck, ND. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 16, 2019 at First Lutheran Church, Washburn. The family will greet family and friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Wednesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn. Interment will be held at a later in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.
Edith was born January 7, 1925 in Washburn the daughter of Gordon and Olga (Schur) Burgum. She was raised and educated in Washburn and graduated from Washburn High School in 1943. She also attended Bismarck Junior College where she received an associate degree in business. Following college Edith worked for the ND Game and Fish Department as a secretary. She married Raymond Sheldon on November 16, 1947 at the Washburn United Methodist Church. They lived and farmed North of Washburn until moving into Washburn. McLean County history was very important to Edith and was evident through her community involvement. Edith was secretary of the McLean County Historical Society for 20 years. She was instrumental in getting Fort Mandan and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center built. She also served on the McLean County Historical Society and Museum Boards and the McLean County Social Service Board for many years. Edith was a very active member of First Lutheran Church and was also a member of the Washburn Study Club and the Federated Women's Club.
Edith's family was most important to her. She will always be remembered for her love of her family and the care shown for her grandchildren. She was a great cook and took great pride in preparing meals at harvest time.
She is survived by two sons, Brad (Cathy) and Tom (Kim), both of Washburn; two daughters, Kris (Rick) Link and Karyn Sheldon, both of Bismarck; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Schulz and Lorraine Burgum; her grandchildren, Jocelyn (Morris) Duffy, Jon (Leslie) Sheldon, Joe (Kellie) Sheldon, Justin (Tammy) Sheldon, Callie (Todd) Sinner, Tyge (Ali) Sheldon, Samantha (Adam) Nies, Macy Geck; her step grandchildren, Justin Link, Jason Link and Jennifer (John) Hopkins; twenty one great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2017, two infant sons, two brothers, John and Jim Burgum and two sisters, Margaret Plasterer and Marian Stevens.
