Ed Schumann, 63, of Mercer, ND died February 11, 2018 at Eventide Senior Living Community in Jamestown, ND.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 20 th at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mercer with Pastor Randy Emgarten officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery of rural Mercer with military rites provided by the Butte American Legion Post #270.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mercer.
Edward Milton Schumann was born February 21, 1954 in Hazen, ND to Marion & Dina (Horning) Schumann. He attended school in Mercer, ND and graduated from Mercer High School in 1972. Ed enlisted in the U.S. Army and was hardship discharged in 1973. He was employed with Lauer Auto Repair and a surveying company in Bismarck for a few years before returning to Mercer, ND where he purchased a gas station & repair shop. Ed owned and operated Ed's Service Station in Mercer from 1982 to 2016. He was an active member of his community, serving on the Mercer City Council for 24 years and also holding the position of Mayor. He was a long-time member of the Turtle Lake-Mercer School Board and a member of the Mercer Fire Department from 1984 to 2016. Ed enjoyed cutting hay and custom combining during his "vacation time" away for the service station. He also enjoyed fishing and telling jokes. Ed was a member of the AMVETS and the Butte American Legion Post #270.
He is survived by two sons, Jon Schumann of Mercer & James (Amanda) Schumann of Turtle Lake; two grandchildren, Jake & Cheyanne Schumann; his mother, Dina Schumann of Bismarck; five siblings, Ernie (Cindy) Schumann, Elaine (Gale) Kurle, Arlys (Gerald) Kassian, Bert Knell, and Charlene (Jerry) Lelm; and many nieces & nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his father (Marion), and one brother (Robert).
