Obituary

Duane Teigen, 82 of Hazen, formerly of Washburn & Velva, ND, died August 19, 2014 at the Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva with Pastor Tim Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Velva City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn, and Saturday one hour prior to time of service at the church in Velva.


Duane was born May 10, 1932 in Towner, ND to Irvin & Wilma (Carpenter) Teigen. He was raised near the Truax Traer Coal Mine outside of Velva, ND and attended country school. Duane married his childhood sweetheart, Josephine "Josie" Libke, on July 3, 1950 in Minot. Following their marriage, Duane worked road construction for several years. He was then employed with the Glenharold Coal Mine near Stanton, ND where he worked for many years as Mine Manager before retiring in 1994. In retirement, Duane acquired more time for his passion of fishing and spent countless hours on a fishing boat. He also treasured spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed watching sporting events on television, especially the Minnesota Twins. He valued his dog "Aggie" as a companion and would often mention that "everyone should have a dog". Duane loved to work in his yard and garden and enjoyed playing card games, most notably Pinochle & Skip-Bo.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Josephine Teigen of Hazen; six daughters, Janice (Ardell) Batke of Hazen, Jackie Sands (Keith Bloms) of Minot, Sandra (Mark) Nelson of Hazen, Kathy (Dale) Fix of Auburn, WA, Lisa (Doug) Goetz of Champlin, MN, & Stephanie (Curt) Van Hoorn of Dickinson; one son, Bradley (Alyson) Teigen of Washburn; grandchildren, Jason Batke, Karyn Van Inwagen, Gregory Batke, Heidi Aanerud, Michael Sands, Adam Sands, Katie Gendreau, Erin Hancock, Daniel Nelson, Whitney Fix-Lanes, Kayla Fix, Samantha Fix, Ryan Goetz, Ashley Harmon, Jaden Wanner, Riley Van Hoorn, Seth Teigen, & Nolan Teigen; great-grandchildren, Paris, Aspen, Branson, Tyson, Rylan, Macey, Brody, Talon, Keaton, Presley, Samuel, Griffin, Henrik, Hudson, Breck, Hadley, Owan, RyLynn, Case, Briggs, & Nora; four sisters, Mavis (Bill) Netzlof of Velva, Beverly (Mike) Ballentine of Missouri, Ione (Vernon) Klimpel of Fargo, & Donna (Bob) Drabb of Georgia.

Duane is preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law (Bill Sands), brother (Mason), and an infant brother.
