Obituary

Duane Stavig, 82, Turtle Lake, ND died May 11, 2019 at his residence in Turtle Lake under the care of hospice.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Turtle Lake.  A vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday also at the church in Turtle Lake.  Interment will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday at the ND Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, ND.

Duane was born June 30, 1936 in Oslo, Minnesota the son of Arthur and Ann (Simington) Stavig. He was raised and educated in Alvarado, Minnesota. He graduated from high school in 1955. He worked as a farm laborer for area farmers near Alvarado. Duane served in the U.S. Army for a short period of time. He married Mary McGuire on February 20, 1961 in Crookston, Minnesota. Following their marriage they lived in Devils Lake, ND and later moved to East Grand Forks, Minnesota where he worked for the University of North Dakota in maintenance. They moved to Oregon in 1969 where they owned and operated Montag Gutter Service. They returned to Oslo, Minnesota in 1981. Duane worked as a custodian at the State School in Grafton, ND until returning to UND as maintenance supervisor. He retired from UND after 20 years of service. Duane then continued to work for Ralph Engelstad Arena until moving to Turtle Lake in 2004. He continued his maintenance interests with the Community Memorial Hospital for 9 more years.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Duane was a member of the Oslo American Legion and Lions Club. He was a Boy Scout Leader, Do Dad Leader and a Indian Guide Leader.

Duane is survived by his wife, Mary of Turtle Lake; his son Michael Stavig of Turtle Lake; his daughters, Virginia (Don) Bushaw of Manvel,ND, Angela (Pete) Witucki of Coranado, CA and Karen Stavig of Grand Forks; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his sisters, Ruby (Hilton) Hjelle of East Grand Forks, MN and Lorna (Arlin) Jacobson of Hoffman Lake, MN and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Jerri Stavig.
