Duane H. Fischer, age 82 of Underwood, ND passed away Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, July 8th at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church in Underwood with Rev. Frank J. Schuster as celebrant.
Interment will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan, at 2:00 PM Thursday.
Visitation will be held from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday at the church followed by a 7:00 PM Prayer Service.
Duane was born April 12, 1928 in Langdon, ND to Adolph & Anna Fischer. His family moved to Valley City, ND and he graduated from St. Catherine's High School in Valley City in 1946. Following high school, he attended the ND State School of Science in Wahpeton where he studied auto body repair. Duane then enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1951. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Walters on Sept. 5, 1950 in Valley City. Together they raised six children. Duane, along with George Werre, operated a body shop in Napoleon for two years before relocating to Underwood in 1954. Duane and George owned and operated the Underwood Body Shop until they sold the business and retired in 1990. Duane enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. He was a member of St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church and a former member of the Underwood Fire & Ambulance Departments. He also served several years on the Underwood City Commission.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Fischer of Underwood; three sons & three daughters, Ronald Fischer of Nampa, ID, Diane Birkholz of Scandia, MN, Gary (Nancy) Fischer of Underwood, Karen (David) Haaland of Montrose, MN, Cindy (Scott) Schlag of Sioux Falls, SD, & Micheal (Beth) Fischer of Esko, MN; twelve grandchildren & ten great-grandchildren; eight brothers, & one sister.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers.
