Duane (Dewey) Darwin Brenneise died October 20, 2023, at his home with his loving companion, Marjo, by his side. He was born September 11, 1939, in Hebron, ND, the son of Oscar and Frieda (Mertz) Brenneise. They moved to Coleharbor, ND in 1941.
Growing up, Dewey worked for area farmers until graduating from Coleharbor High School in 1957. After graduation he went to work building roads with heavy equipment for local contractors. Dewey served in the US Army from 1962 to 1964 and returned to construction and tending bar from 1964 to 1968. In 1969, he went to work for the US Fish and Wildlife Service at the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge until his retirement in 1995.
Dewey married Geraldine Bowen in 1976. They had two children, Randy and Carey, from Geraldine's previous marriage. They lived in Riverdale for a brief time before moving to Coleharbor where Geraldine passed away in 2002.
Dewey met, "his beloved best friend", Marjo Diede, in 2004 and they consider themselves blessed to have shared 19 years together until his passing. Dewey had a close relationship with her three sons, Rick (Patty), Roby (Lezlie), and Randy (Carla) St. Germain and their families, whom Dewey considered "his family too".
He is survived by his stepson, Randy Bowen (Theresa) of Visalia, California and stepdaughter, Carey Bowen of Clatskanie, Oregon. Dewey's step grandchildren, Reno (Sarah) Bowen, Renae Bowen, Kisa (Matt) Walsh and Zachary Draper and two step great grandchildren, Brody and Sydney Walsh.
Dewey was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Frieda Brenneise, and wife, Geraldine.
A Prayer service will be held at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Underwood, ND on Monday, November 6, 2023 at 7:00 pm. A Memorial service will be on Tuesday, November 7 at 10:30 am at Augustana Lutheran Church. Burial will be at the Coleharbor Cemetery.
