Douglas James Auck, age 81, of Underwood ND, passed away on July 10, 2026, at Turtle Lake Hospital. Funeral service will be at St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Church, Underwood, ND on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 6:00PM-7:00PM a Prayer service will start at 7:00PM visitation will resume one hour prior on Friday. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure’s Catholic Cemetery, Underwood, ND.

Doug was the born on September 9, 1944, in Bismarck, ND to Orien and Irma Auck. He graduated from Driscoll High School in 1961. Doug married his high school sweetheart, Jan Maluski, on September 28, 1963. Together, Jan and Doug raised their four sons, whom they considered their greatest accomplishments.

Throughout his life, Doug worked in many occupations. He began in construction before he and his wife, Jan, purchased and operated the Sterling Corner Bar in Sterling, ND. Later, they moved to Jamestown, where he drove semi and delivery trucks. Bismarck was the next stop, where he worked for Clairmont construction until he accepted a position at the Falkirk Mine outside of Underwood in 1976. The family moved shortly after to Underwood, where Doug worked at the mine until his retirement in 1999.

Retirement did not slow him down. He returned to what he loved the most: trucking and helping area farmers and elevators. Those retirement jobs were only in the Summertime. Winters were for fun in the sundown in Arizona and Texas with fellow retirees from Underwood- the Hegers, Andersons, Sigurdsons, various family, and friends they met from all over the US and Canada.

Fishing and hunting were another passion of Doug’s while living in Underwood. Most of that was done with his boys, Jan, and especially his friend and sidekick, Jerry Radke.

No matter what Doug was doing, he always made time for people. He loved hearing everyone’s stories and he greeted everyone with his warm smile. He was a big flirt, to say the least. In his retirement jobs, he was known to bring laughter, joy, and energy to the workplace and a great mentor to all the young men he worked with. They all loved working with him. He was one of a kind. God definitely broke the mold when He made Doug.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jan; four sons, Kevin (Kelly Lynn), Scott, Shawn (Staci), and Kelly; 11 grandchildren, Blaine, Elise, Shaylee, Shaydon, Andrea (Nick), Dawson, Dakota, Dillon, Jarek, Bryce, and Tanner; 4 greatgrandchildren; Channing, Alli, Brent, Lane; two sisters, Oreen (Bob), Sheila; one brother, Troy (Kellie); along with many other family and friends who will miss him.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Orien and Irma Auck; brothers Warren and Rick; and sisters Dorothy and Penny.
