Dorothy was born August 14, 1931 near Garrison, ND to Richard and Lydia (Traub) Schumaier. She was raised on the family farm near Garrison and was educated at nearby country schools. Dorothy married Fred Rath on October 28, 1956 in Garrison. Together they made their home in Turtle Lake for over 60 years where she worked as a Nurse's Aide in Garrison and Turtle Lake hospitals. Dorothy also worked a short time for Lindteigen Construction and at the Turtle Lake-Mercer Public School. The love of taking care of others drew her back to being a Nurse's Aide and working in home health care. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and loved to help with activities in the community. She also enjoyed mat making, crocheting, embroidery, cooking, puzzles, camping with family members, and traveling in the motorhome with Fred.

She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Fred Rath of Turtle Lake; two daughters, Norma (Mike) Kendersi of Mesa, AZ, & Jane Gutknecht of Washburn; grandchildren, Bowen Gutknecht and Brea (Charles) Tatum of Bismarck; great grandchildren, Roosevelt Gutknecht and Kimberly Jane Tatum, Joshua and Jacob Tatum; brother, Emil (Tomiko) Schumaier of Hoffman, IL; brother-in-law, Tom Bandy of Montgomery, AL; sisters-in-law, Rae Schumaier of Coleharbor and Irene Schumaier of Minot; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
