Dorothy D. Johannes, 90, of Alliance, NE, formerly of rural Underwood, ND, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, Nebraska.

Dorothy was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on January 25, 1917 to Henry and Marie (Petersen) Dueholm. Dorothy spent her youth in rural northwest Wisconsin, where she attended school. Dorothy graduated from Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1938. She married her husband of 60 years, Gerald W. Johannes, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolf Point, Montana on April 3, 1941.
Following their marriage, Gerald and Dorothy lived in Des Moines, Iowa where Dorothy worked at the Des Moines V. A. Hospital. In 1947, they moved to Underwood, North Dakota and took over operation of the Johannes family farm. During this period Dorothy worked at Riverdale Hospital. In 1958, they moved to Minneapolis, and Dorothy worked at Deaconess Hospital. From 1964 until retiring in 1985, Dorothy worked alongside her husband, who was a nursing home administrator, in the communities of Alliance, Kearney, Broken Bow, Nebraska and Traer, Iowa. In retirement, they moved to Renville, Minnesota. Following her husband's death in 2001, Dorothy moved to Olivia, Minnesota and then returned to Alliance, NE in 2005. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Alliance. Dorothy was a great cook, and loved playing the piano and organ. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, delightful sense of humor and her steadfast devotion to God and her family.
Dorothy is survived by five children; Michael Ann (Dr. Robert) Haakenson of Olivia, Minnesota, Jerry (Linda) Johannes of Alliance, Nebraska, Shirley (Fred) Hackbart of Manly, Iowa, David (Penny) Johannes of Hemingford, Nebraska, and Peter (Dena) Johannes of Sidney, Nebraska; her sister, Charlotte Mae Brown of Sioux City Iowa, a brother-in-law, Wallace Gradin of Underwood, North Dakota; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Her husband Gerald, and her son Philip, preceded her in death.
