Dorothy was born May 10, 1917 at Turtle Lake, ND, the daughter to Charles & Persis (Eckert) Hanson. She was raised on her parent's farm west of Turtle Lake along with her younger brother, Leonard. She attended rural grade school and graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1935. She met the love of her life, Leroy (Roy) F. Evans when he arrived with a threshing crew to her family's farm at harvest time. Roy purchased an engagement ring from the Sears and Roebuck catalog for $19.00 (today, that ring is valued at $700 and a family heirloom). Dorothy and Roy were united in marriage on July 3, 1938 at the United Methodist parsonage in Turtle Lake, ND. That evening, many friends and family celebrated the wedding by enjoying homemade ice cream and treats all while braving a windy rainstorm that blew down the only tree on the couple's farm. Dorothy and Roy made their home on a farm eight miles south of Turtle Lake where they farmed and ranched for many years. The Lord was the centerpiece of their marriage and they became faithful members of the Turtle Lake United Methodist Church. Dorothy taught Sunday School, Bible School, and became a life-long member of the U.M.W.. Dorothy was a charter member of the Turtle Lake Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and assisted with the annual "Hospital Supper" for over fifty years. She was a member of the North Dakota Pioneer Daughters and the Red Trail Homemakers Club. Dorothy served as Treasurer of Asbury Camp (a Christian camp for kids near Washburn) for several years where she and Roy worked for one week annually for many years. She is remembered for her work on the farm, at different times in her life, milking cows, raising chickens, gathering eggs, raising turkeys, and birthing lambs and calves. Dorothy also tended a large garden, planted flowers, and cared for a very productive apple tree for many years. She made many flannel baby blankets for giveaway and sewed and mended for her daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her grandchildren who always lit up her eyes. The effects of Alzheimer's disease required her to leave her farm home and enter the Turtle Lake Community Memorial Hospital swing-bed unit in January 2005.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Leroy F. Evans of Turtle Lake, ND;
one son, Robert (Peg) Evans of Turtle Lake, ND; one granddaughter, Terri (Nathan) Phelps; one grandson, Brandon Jon Evans; two great grandchildren, Samantha and Cody Phelps; two sisters-in-law, Ruby V. Hanson of Turtle Lake, ND, & Alice Evans of Wahpeton, ND; one brother-in-law, Cecil (Annette) Evans of Littleton, CO; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother (Leonard Hanson).
