Doris M. Martin, 94, Bismarck, ND formerly of Washburn died April 20, 2019 at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, April 25, 2019 at St. Edwin's Catholic Church, Washburn with Father Josh Waltz officiating. Visitation will be held at St. Gabriel's Community Chapel, 4580 Coleman Street, Bismarck on Wednesday beginning at 5:30 PM with a Rosary at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church in Washburn. Interment will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday at the ND Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Doris Marguerite (Dean) Martin was born in Grand Forks, ND on October, 3, 1924, the oldest of three children born to Floyd Seymour Dean and M. Marguerite (Fox) Dean. She was raised on Willow Ridge Farm, in Holmes Township, near Hatton, ND. She attended Mayville State College for one year and was a basketball cheerleader. She continued her education at North Dakota Agricultural College (NDSU) where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1946. She is an alumnus of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Doris moved to Washburn where she taught home economics and biology. She was the founder and charter advisor for the Future Homemakers of America Chapter at Washburn High School.
She married Clifford Charles Martin on June 26 th , 1948 in Reynolds, ND. They shared 52 years together. They resided in Washburn, where they raised four children, two sons and two daughters. In the late 1990's they moved to Bismarck because of Clifford's health.
Doris was a 71 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as poppy chairman and Color Guard numerous years. She was a member of the Sakakawea Homemakers Club, St Edwin's Altar Society, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a Mclean County 4-H Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, Band Mother and was named as honorary Washburn American Legion Baseball Fan. She was also a member of the Bismarck Single Caring Seniors Club, Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Parish and served as a Director on the Bismarck Golden Kiwanis Board. Doris enjoyed being a member of the Prairie Peddler/Scheels coffee group for over 20 years and was a very avid sports fan enthusiast. She and Clifford were very involved in all their children's numerous activities. They were always in the stands, in the audience and teaching them life lessons.
The summer of 2017 Doris moved to St. Gabriel's Assisted Living and embraced all the staff, activities, and religious and social opportunities. She was known to many there as St. Gabriel's "social butterfly" and was a member of the Welcome Committee, welcoming new residents. She truly loved her time spent there.
Doris is survived by her four children, Dean (Wanda) Martin, Little Rock, AR, Robert (Gail) Martin, Jamestown, ND, Mary Martin, Grand Forks, ND, Carol (Michael) Wegleitner, Coeur d'Alene, ID; her six grandchildren, Ryan (Adria) Martin, Austin, AR, Justin (Sara) Martin, Little Rock, AR, Carrie Orn, Jamestown, ND, Jill (Jaden) Grossman, Bismarck, ND, Levi (Jenna) Wegleitner, Park City, UT, Brett (Madison) Wegleitner, Mandan, ND; her six great grandchildren, Kinley & Kenzie Martin, Libby Martin, Olivia & Porter Orn and Maverick Wegleitner and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford, her parents, sister, Jeanette Evenson, brother-in-law, Milton R. Evenson, brother, John S. Dean, sister-in-law, Kay Dean , and her grandson-in-law, Jeremy Orn.
