Donny was born in a 1941 Plymouth Coupe near Wilton, ND on October 5, 1946, to Albert and Eunice (Keck) Kost and had 2 brothers Terry and James Kost. He graduated from Washburn High School in 1964, while in high school he played football, basketball, track and Legion baseball. His senior year he was captain of the football and basketball teams.
He attended Dickinson State College and graduated in 1968, with a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education, majored in math, and minored in physical education. Don was a teacher and an assistant football and basketball coach in LaMoure, ND for a few years. Later he taught at Jim Hill Junior High in Minot for a year before moving back to the farm where he made it his home until moving to Edgewood Dominion in Bismarck.

He was a member of the Washburn American Legion Post 12 and longtime member of the Washburn Riverview Cemetery Committee and Germans from Russia Society in ND, attending many of the national conventions, gathering family history of his mom and dad’s family.

Don spent time or traveling with longtime friends and family, one of his many trips he returned to Vietnam with Ken Carr and walked in the footsteps where Clay Carr walked in battle of Hue, as well as the places where Don himself served.
