Dewaine A. Olson, age 65 of Washburn, ND, passed away of natural causes on Friday, March 16, 2007 in Minneapolis, MN while visiting family.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, March 23 at Faith Lutheran Church in Bismarck, ND, with the Rev. Chris Alexander, Officiating.
Interment will be held 1:30 PM Friday, March 23 at Riverview Cemetery - Washburn.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM Thursday at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn, and Friday, one hour prior to services at Faith Lutheran Church in Bismarck.
Dewaine Alvin was born on Dec. 22, 1941 at Lisbon, ND the son to Harry and Sarah (Kempel) Olson. At age 3, his family moved to Dawson, ND where he grew up and attended local schools. He graduated from Steele-Dawson High School in 1959. Dewaine married Judy Franz on Sept. 27, 1963 in Napoleon, ND. They moved to Bottineau, ND where he worked for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. They later moved to Mohall, ND where he worked for the local creamery. In 1965, they moved to Bismarck where he worked for the Sweetheart Bakery. During these years, the couple raised two daughters, Tamra and Tania.
In 1967, Dewaine began a 33-year career as a draftsman and topographic inventory technician with the North Dakota Department of Transportation in Bismarck. He retired in 2000. Dewaine married Janice Ellingson on June 5, 1997. They made their home in Washburn until his passing.
Dewaine was an avid hunter of geese, pheasant, and deer. He was also a fisherman and fur trapper. He especially loved to spend time fishing and hunting with his grandsons. He collected rare coins and was active in the Bismarck Coin Club. In the 1970's and 1980's, Dewaine spent many memorable weekends camping with his family and friends at Lake Sakakawea and Lake Audubon, as well as several fishing trips to Canada. He was a member of the Bismarck-Mandan Elks Lodge #1199.
Dewaine is survived by his wife, Janice Olson of Washburn, ND; 2 daughters, Tamra Olson of Warroad, MN and Tania Bullinger of Snohomish, WA; 2 step-sons, Jeffrey (Carissa) Ellingson of St. Louis Park, MN and Mark (Jeannine) Ellingson of Newburgh, NY; 5 grandchildren, Matthew, Bobby Jr., Joshua, and Madelyn Olson of Warroad, MN, and Zachary Bullinger of Snohomish, WA; 2 step-grandchildren, Grant and Alexandra Ellingson of Newburgh, NY; and 1 nephew, Lance Gartner of Citrus Heights, CA.
Dewaine was preceded in death by his parents and his sister (Shirley Gartner Smith).
