Darrel R. O'Shea, 77, of Washburn, formerly of Turtle Lake, died Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the Turtle Lake Hospital. Funeral Mass will be at St. Edwin's Catholic Church, Washburn, ND on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 10:30am. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn, ND. Visitation will be on Monday, September 8, 2025, from 6:00-7:00pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm at the church.
Darrel Robert O'Shea was born on July 18, 1948, to Robert "Bob" & Florence (Narum) O'Shea in Minot, ND. He grew up west of Garrison, ND and later moved to Turtle Lake, ND where he graduated high school in 1966.
Upon graduating, Darrel pursued an education in welding at NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND. He married, Zona Stengel, on August 16, 1969, in Underwood, ND at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church. Together they were blessed with three children: Dawn, Brian, and Dusty.
Darrel began his welding career as an ironworker on the minute man missile sites. He worked as an ironworker during the construction of the Coal Creek Power Station and later was employed as a maintenance mechanic for over 32 years.
Darrel created countless memories with his horses, especially being a teamster with his last team, Star & Stacey. He loved participating in local parades, pioneering with the Fort Seward Wagon Train, working his team at the Rolla Threshing Show, and at the Taylor Horse Fest Days. He was also a member of the Brush Poppers Horse Club for many years. In 2023, Darrel and Zona moved to Washburn, ND and spent the winter months in Mesa, AZ.
He is survived by his wife Zona; daughter Dawn (Warren) Bergquist, son Brian (Amber) O'Shea, daughter Dusty (Todd) Sondrol; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, his siblings Jerry O'Shea, Laurie (Joy) O'Shea, Kim (Dennis) Kurle, in-laws, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
