Daniel Birst, 100, formerly of Turtle Lake, ND, died April 17, 2014 at a Bismarck Care Center.

Funeral Services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, April 21, 2014 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, ND with Pastor Scott Bauman officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the services at the church on Monday.Interment will be held in the Turtle Lake Cemetery, Turtle Lake, ND

Dan was born on January 25, 1914 in Turtle Lake, ND, the son of Conrad and Margaret (Graesley) Birst. The Birst family had emigrated from the Odessa Region of South Russia in 1910. Dan attended country school in the Turtle Lake/Mercer area. On June 12, 1938, Dan married Martha Krein in Turtle Lake. They farmed in the Turtle Lake/Mercer area until their retirement. Following their retirement, they moved to Bismarck.

Dan was a lifelong member of the German Congregational Church in Turtle Lake. He had many fond memories of singing in the church choir and was the first tenor in the Men's quartet. Dan was a gentle and humble man who loved his God, family, and all aspects of farming.

He is survived by a son, Kenneth, Bismarck, ND; a daughter, Gladys Weight, Bismarck, ND; three grandchildren: Lisa (Greg) Kolden, Scarlett (Leap) Chear, and Aaron (Jenny) Birst; and six great-grandchildren: Braden, Hunter, Wyatt, Olivia, Tyler and Jaxon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Martha in 2010; 2 sisters: Regina Krein and Olga Hofer; a brother, Emil Birst; son-in-law: Arlan Weight and a daughter-in-law: Madeline Birst.
