Dale Dean Hanson was born to Henry and Katherine (Flemmer) Hanson on Christmas Day, December 25, 1917, at Underwood, North Dakota. Except for two years (1928-1930) in Elk Grove, California, he lived all his life in the Turtle Lake and Underwood area. Dale graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1940. On February 1, 1940, while still in high school, Dale married Norma Nelson at the Peace Lutheran Church Parsonage in Turtle Lake.
After Dale & Norma were married, they lived at Fred Lukes in Turtle Lake until school was out in the spring, they then lived with Dale's parents until the next spring when they moved to the Ben Hanson farm. In 1948, they bought a house in Turtle Lake. Dale worked for Zwicker Motors, Hanson Hardware, and also farmed as they had purchased the Louis Bergquist homestead. In 1961, Dale and Norma moved to the farm which was homesteaded by Dale's grandparents, Swan and Mary Hanson.
Dale enjoyed hunting and fishing. Dale and Norma were avid square dancers, as they loved to dance and rarely missed a dance in the community. Dale was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He sang in the church choir and the community choir for several years. He also served as Sunday school superintendent, teacher, and as a church council member. Dale was on the Board of directors of Equity Elevator for several years. He also served on the Turtle Lake Alumni Board and the Turtle Lake Park Board. Dale organized a Farmers Appreciation Day in Turtle Lake in 1982. In this event a farm couple sponsored a business couple for an evening banquet and entertainment. From this event Dale received a "North Dakota Heritage Award" from Governor Olson proclaiming the first day of National Agricultural Week as "North Dakota Farmers Day". Dale was a well-known carpenter in the area, building everything from houses to cabinets to his lathe work. Since retirement and moving in to Turtle Lake in 2000, some of his favorite woodworking projects were crosses for the Bible Camp, turned key chains and snowmen. Many friends and family have key chains, snowmen, and other wood items as souvenirs.
He loved playing Skip-Bo, going to dinner with their birthday bunch, eating at Bev's Café, the 5 for 5 deal at Arby's, coffee at Dennis's, the Sunday afternoon polka party on KBMR radio, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 68 years, Norma of Turtle Lake; 3 sons and daughters-in-law: David & Olga Hanson of Spring Hill, FL; Darrell & Ethel Hanson of Mesa, AZ; Dennis & Sharon Hanson of Turtle Lake, ND; 1 daughter and son-in-law: Nadean & Gaylin Schmidt of Minot, ND.
