Obituary
Clark J. Ness, 73, of Washburn, died at 7:30 PM, Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, ND after a courageous battle against cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, April 1, 2017 at First Lutheran Church of Washburn with Pastor Erik Johnson officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 AM Saturday at the church. Inurnment will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.
Clark was born in Washburn on November 24, 1943, to the late Austin and Gladys (Thompson) Ness. Clark graduated from Washburn High School in 1961 and received certification as an electronics technician from the North Dakota State School of Science in 1963. He worked as an electrician in Fargo, Grand Forks and Mandan before coming home to ranch with his father and brother in 1973. He served as a board member of the Washburn Rural Fire Department, and was a lifetime member of the First Lutheran Church of Washburn and the McLean County Historical Society. Clark loved his community deeply. He was fascinated with nature and local history, devoted to education and mentoring young people, and skilled at diagnosing problems and "MacGyvering" solutions. In addition to ranching, he and his brother took an interest in old-fashioned sawmills and gave exhibits at various community celebrations. His favorite things were time with family, Sunday breakfasts with friends, the Mandan 4th of July Parade, roaming the woods, and being at home with his wife and "Dog" his dog.
He is survived by his loving wife, Claudette (Carr) Ness; brother, Gene Ness; and sister, Marilyn Wagner; his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Tina (Heier) Ness and their son Andrew; his daughters, Stephanie Ness and Robyn Ness; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Warren and Dawn (O'Shea) Bergquist and their children Brenden and Ashley; his stepdaughter and son-in-law, Karen (Bergquist) and Richard Hanson and their children Rachel, Joshua, and Jacob, as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
