Clarence W. Hanson, age 92 of Velva, ND, formerly of Turtle Lake, died Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
Funeral Services: 10:00 AM Monday, Feb. 16, 2009;
Trinity Lutheran Church - Turtle Lake, ND;
Rev. Betty J. Stedman, Officiating
Interment will be held at a later date in the Turtle Lake Cemetery
Visitation: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home in Turtle Lake
and will continue Monday, one hour prior to time of service at the church.
Clarence Walter Hanson was born December 28, 1916 in Turtle Lake, ND to Henry S. & Katherine (Flemmer) Hanson. He was raised in the Turtle Lake area and attended grade school at various rural schools. From 1930 to 1933, Clarence spent time in California where he attended school. He later returned to Turtle Lake and graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1939. Clarence married Emma Wolf on Sept. 29, 1940 at Peace Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake. He was employed with the Equity Elevator in Turtle Lake and drove bulk truck for Standard Oil in Washburn for a short time. During the 1960's, Clarence drove bus for the Turtle Lake Public School District. Clarence farmed north of Turtle Lake for many years and retired from the farm in 1972. He was also employed as a postal clerk in Turtle Lake and retired from the Post Office in 1981. Clarence served as a Fire Chief , Boy Scout leader, and Lions Club President. Clarence was a member of the Polled Hereford Association for several years. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as church council President, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the church choir. Clarence enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching sporting events, traveling to flea markets, and collecting flat irons.
He is survived by two daughters, Priscilla Hanson of Bismarck, & Sheila (Philip) Mayer of Rochester, MN; one son, Rev. Curtis (Susan) Hanson of Turtle Lake; two grandchildren, Ondrea Sue (Scott) Miller of Helena, MT & Tisha Ann (Steve) Scheuer of Bismarck; four great-grandchildren, Madeline & Allison Miller, Onna & Faith Scheuer; two sisters, Norrine Zwicker of Turtle Lake, & Jeanette Britton of Maryland; & one brother, Ralph (Deloris) Hanson of Brea, CA
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, wife (Emma) & one brother (Dale).
