Obituary

Clara Mautz, 90, Underwood, ND, died June 20, 2014 in a Bismarck care center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Underwood, with Reverend William Traphagan and Reverend Tom Puffe officiating. Burial will be in the Underwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood and will continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.

Clara Mautz was born January 7, 1924, to Henry and Bertha (Blatter) Flath at rural Garrison. She was educated at Garrison Public School.
She married Fred Mautz, January 20, 1942, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Garrison. They lived and farmed on Mallard Island near Coleharbor until the dam was built. They moved to Underwood in 1949 and farmed until 1978 when they retired and moved into Underwood. Fred passed away December 28, 2000.

Clara was active in her church and community. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the LWML. She served as president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and mission service chairman. She taught Sunday school for 35 years and weekday school and Vacation Bible School for many years. She was also a member of the choir. Community activities included being a member of the PTA, Band Mothers, Nursing Home Auxiliary and the Clinic Auxiliary where she served as president.

Through the years Clara and Fred did quite a bit of traveling. They attended many of Fred's Army reunions in various states.
Clara enjoyed being with family, music, gardening, quilting, crocheting and embroidery.

Survivors include two daughters: Joyce Bruns, St. Charles, MO; Kaye Jessen, Dickinson, ND; one son, Duane Mautz, Underwood, ND; one granddaughter, Christa Jessen, Denver, CO; three brothers: George Flath, Banning, CA; Gordon Flath, Puyallup, WA; Clarence Flath, Schofield, WI; four sisters-in-in-law: many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband Fred; infant son Alan John; parents Henry and Bertha Flath; two sisters – Helen Spindel and Esther Allers; four brothers – Willis, Herbert, Arnold, and Walter Flath; and three brothers-in-law.

Memorials may be made to: St. John's Lutheran Church, Underwood; St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck or Dakota Boys Ranch, Minot.
