Carol was born January 4, 1921, in Creighton, Nebraska to Luther and Myrtle (Raymond) Brown. The family spent 4 years in Montana before moving to a farm near Butte ND in 1925 where Carol was raised and attended country school, often riding to school on horseback. She graduated from Butte High School and attended Minot State College. She later completed her teaching Standard, and in 1971 earned her BS degree in Elementary Education from UND in Grand Forks ND. She taught in two area country schools from 1955 to 1959, and at Turtle Lake-Mercer Elementary school from 1959 to her retirement in 1986.

Carol was a beloved 2 nd grade teacher for 30 years. She loved teaching and she loved her 2 nd grade children. She received a nomination for Teacher of the Year in 1984. She received "favorite teacher" designation from many graduating seniors whom she had taught as 2 nd graders.

Carol possessed abundant energy for many activities, including caring for her own Mother during a long illness, traveling with her family, and later with lifelong friend, Nan Borg. A highlight of her retirement years was spending a couple of weeks every spring and fall for 25 years, with a special niece, Mary Lou (Harmon) Kurtz and her family in Houston Texas.

Always a seamstress, Carol made many of her own clothes and later made many beautiful quilts, winning a ribbon at the annual Capital Quilters Show in Bismarck in 2006.

Carol served her community as a member of the Turtle Lake City Council, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, The Daughters of the American Revolution, and Trinity Lutheran Church. She held offices in the TL-M Local Teachers Union of the ND NDEA, and was a member of the NDEA Council and NDEA's Council on Reading.

Carol rode horse every chance she had, even into her 90's. She took flying lessons and flew her own plane, a 150 Cessna, for several years for her own pleasure. She was member of Turtle Lake's Airport Authority.

Carol was an animal lover, always taking in orphaned baby animals, until one particular year she wound up with a badger, a skunk and 3 raccoons, in addition to a dog, Poncho, a cat and a bird already in residence. She later cared for an aging horse, Duke; had a much-loved Maltese dog named Fritzie and another rescue Maltese, Rocky.

Carol is survived by 2 daughters, Joanne (Jim) Britton, Turtle Lake and Lori Allison, Indio, California; 2 sons, Dennis of Turtle Lake and Mark (Bonnie) of Bismarck and a daughter in law, Sharon Sundby of Bismarck; 7 Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren and 9 Great-Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Leroy (Buster) Sundby; her oldest son, Alan; her parents; her sisters, Jeane Olson and Janice Wipper; her brothers, Raymond Brown and Fred Brown.

Memorials may be designated to the Turtle Lake Community Hospital or to the Central Dakota Humane Society.
