Obituary

Burnell B. Johnson, age 88 of Underwood, ND, died Thursday, November 10, 2011 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, Nov. 14th at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church in Underwood with Rev. Frank J. Schuster as celebrant. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with military rites provided by the Turtle Lake American Legion Post 133.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church with a prayer service to follow.

Burnell was born July 18, 1923 in Bismarck, ND to Heddor & Eva (Monroe) Johnson. He graduated from Underwood High School in 1941 and continued his education at the N.D. State School of Forestry in Bottineau. He married Alice Scott in May 1944 and they made their home in Underwood. Burnell served in the Army Air Force during World War II as a crewmember of a B-24 Liberator bomber. He flew 33 missions out of Italy and was among the very few flight crews that flew to Europe and returned with the same aircraft. Burnell was recently honored with a trip to Washington, DC with the Roughrider Honor Flight of World War II veterans. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in the Underwood area for 30 years. He also worked a short time for the Oscar Will Flower Shop in Bismarck, painted signs for an Underwood painter, and worked as a clerk and part-time bus driver for the Underwood Public School. In his earlier years he was a member of the Underwood Fire Department and a long-time member of the V.F.W. Post. Burnell and Alice spent over 20 years traveling to Mission, Texas during the winter months. He enjoyed walking the Westridge Golf Course in Underwood and hitting 3 or 4 balls on each hole.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice Johnson of Underwood; five children, Terry Johnson (special friend Connie) of Blair, NE, Barb (Jack) Jehn of Mesa, AZ, Greg (Nica) Johnson of Underwood, Jeff (Chris) Johnson of Peoria, AZ, & Jay (Shelley) Johnson of Cleveland, OH; 16 grandchildren, & 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers (Martel & Wes), two grandchildren (Ross & Chad), and one infant daughter (Karen).
