Obituary

Betty Werre kept her feisty farm girl attitude until she died peacefully on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at St. Catherine South in Fargo, ND in the care of HIA Hospice. A memorial service will be held at Sunne Lutheran Church on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 1:30PM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Sunne Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Betty Jean Zacher was born August 9, 1933, in Leith, ND, to Edward Zacher and Mathilda (Zeller) Zacher. She grew up on the farm with her two brothers, Harry and Reuben, and her sister, Luella. Betty told amazing stories about living on the farm, bringing in the cows with her dog, Rex, and swimming in the Cannonball River. Betty attended rural school in the area and graduated from Elgin High School in May 1951. After graduation, Betty received an emergency teaching certificate and taught for five years in one-room rural schools in the Elgin area.

Betty married Kenneth Werre in Elgin, ND, on August 21, 1955. Ken and Betty lived in Rapid City and Bison, SD, before moving to Wilton, ND, in 1963. Ken taught business education and was the principal at Wilton High School until his death on May 18, 1985.

Ken and Betty had three children: Jay Dean on March 26, 1956; Pamela Ann on April 28, 1958; and Bryan Lynn on September 19, 1960.

Betty sold Tupperware in the Wilton area for 10 years. She was also employed at a number of local businesses including Werre's Cafe, the Wilton Cafe, and Herner's Mini-Mart. From 1990 to 2002, Betty worked as a teacher's aide and was proud of her work with physically and mentally challenged students in the Wilton Elementary School. She was a 31-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as a Wilton City Commissioner from 1988 to 1994. She was a long-time member of Sunne Lutheran Church and loved singing in the church choir.

Betty was famous for baking “Betty’s buns” and also for her talent in making German dishes such as dumplings, pigs in the blanket, kuchen, struddle and knoephla soup. Betty enjoyed line dancing and doing crafts such as crocheting, ceramics, and sewing. She also enjoyed playing cards such as hand and foot, whist, solitaire, and dominoes. Betty had an infectious laugh and truly had a zest for life.

Betty is survived by her three children Jay (Debra) Werre, Beulah, ND; Pam (Jeff Weigel) Werre, Fargo, ND; and Bryan Werre, New Salem, ND, her grandchildren Amanda Werre, Tiffany Werre, Karlee Werre, Amanda (Tyler) Welk, Ariel Bibb, and Alex (Derek) Miller, her great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Luella Heber and her brother, Reuben Zacher. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Harry Zacher, infant sister, Bertie Lue, sister-in-law, Esther Zacher, and brother-in-law, Paul Heber.

The family wishes to thank the all of the staff at Maple View Memory Care, St. Catherine South, and HIA Hospice for all of their excellent and loving care of Betty.

Memorials may be made to the Wilton Legion Auxiliary, the Sunne Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, or the Wilton Food Pantry all in Wilton, ND.
