Bertha was born November 12, 1920 near Mercer, ND to Christian & Magdalena (Bonnet) Derheim. She married Fred Jans on Sept. 4, 1937 in McClusky. They settled 12 miles north of Mercer until 1945 when Fred entered the U.S. Army during World War II. During Fred's deployment, she lived in McClusky until his return in 1947. They purchased land north of Mercer where Bertha milked cows and assisted in the operation of a grain and cattle farm. Bertha worked very hard on the farm but always made time for music, which was her greatest passion. She traveled with the family band, The Midnight Drifters, for many years. The band played for many local birthday parties and area celebrations. She would often yodel and sing along with the band. She enjoyed playing the guitar alongside her husband Fred who played the harmonica and accordion. Bertha loved to crochet and bake kuchen and strudel. She would often make 40 to 50 kuchen at one time. Bertha entered the Prairieview Nursing Home in 2005 and made her last dance with the assistance of her walker in August 2011 at the age of 90.

She is survived by six children, Darlene (Earl) Cross of Howard, SD, Ervin (Diana) Jans of Mercer, Betty Ann (Ronnie) Schatz of Mercer, Brenda (Bill) Meuchel-Fibiger of Mandan, Arlene Peterson of McClusky, & Alvin Jans of Bismarck; 35 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, & 12 great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard (Grace) Derheim of Minneapolis, MN & Donald (Janet) Derheim of Blaine, MN; and two sisters-in-law, Pat Derheim of Minneapolis, MN, & Ella Derheim of Bismarck.
