Obituary

Barbara Brewster, 85, of Washburn, ND, died May 17, 2023 at Sunset Drive a Prospera Community, Mandan, ND.  Memorial services will be held at 10:30am, Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at First Lutheran Church, Washburn with Pastor Dennis Ristvedt officiating.  Burial will be held at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.  Visitation will be held for 1 hour before the services.

Barbara was born on November 26, 1937 in Wakonda, SD the daughter of Clifford A. & Ethel K (Brandon) Cook.  She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school at Volin, SD.  She graduated from Irene High School and Nettleton Community College, Sioux Falls, SD.

She married TSgt Donald E. Weygand on November 29, 1958, to this union a son, Mark was born.  The family lived on Air Force bases in Montana, Alaska, Arizona and Utah.  Donald died unexpectedly on March 25, 1970.

Barbara and her son, Mark moved to Sioux Falls in 1970, there she worked for Raven Industries in Sioux Falls where she met her future husband, Richard Brewster.  They were married in Sioux Falls on December 9, 1972.  In 1978, they moved to Washburn, ND where she worked as an office secretary at First Lutheran Church from 1980 to 1984.  From 1984 to 2003, she was employed by the Washburn Leader News, which later became the Leader News, retiring in 2003.

She was successfully treated for cancer in 2003, and again in 2006.  After successful surgeries and treatments, she was able to enjoy remission.  The disease returned in 2011 and during this time of treatments, Barbara continued to rely on her faith and trust in God that he was always by her side providing the strength and comfort she needed.

Barbara was a member of First Lutheran Church in Washburn, where she served on the church council and as an officer of the women's group.  She participated in various Bible studies.  She was a former board member of the McLean County Christian Women's Club.

Barbara and Dick enjoyed many world-wide travels together and especially loved the summer days spent at their lake cabin on Lake Sakakawea.  She always looked forward to spending time with her son, Mark and the camping and canoeing trips they shared in the beautiful areas of Utah.

She is survived by her loving husband, Richard of Washburn; son, Mark E. Weygand of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters:  Eunice Jorgensen and Shirley Watke, both of Sioux Falls, SD; two brother and sisters-in-law:  Don and Teri Brewster, of Washburn, ND and Dale and Debbie Brewster of Bismarck ND and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Donald Weygand; brother-in-law, Merle Watke; niece. Jill Jorgensen and nephew, Kim Watke.

Memorials preferred to First Lutheran Church in Washburn or Washburn Lions Club sight program.
