Arthur Edward Wohl was born October 23, 1917 in Anamoose, ND to Adam and Pauline (Brahm) Wohl. He graduated from Anamoose High School in May 1935. He attended the University of North Dakota and worked for the N.D. Highway Department and the U.S. Geological Survey prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corp in December 1942. During World War II, Art flew many missions from England with the 385th Bomb Group as a top turret gunner on a B-17 aircraft. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to work for the U.S. Geological Survey. Art married Shirley Christensen on June 20, 1948 in Flaxton, ND. They lived in Minot for a short time where Art worked as an auditor for Westland Oil Company. The couple then moved to Anamoose and he took over his father's Standard Oil & Bulk Gas business in December 1949. Art and Shirley moved to Underwood in 1952 where they raised three children. Art continued to work in the Standard Oil business and Shirley taught school in Underwood. Art was an active member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Underwood and was involved in many civic affairs. He retired from Standard Oil in 1974 and began working for the Soil Conservation Service until 1983. Following Shirley's retirement, they enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida and Arizona. Art & Shirley moved to Bismarck in 1999 and became members of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Art was an avid golfer, even playing a round of golf with friends on his 90th birthday. He enjoyed playing cribbage, and for many years played with Shirley on the same cribbage board he used with fellow crew members on B-17 aircraft missions. Art also took delight in giving his sons periodic cribbage lessons.
