Obituary

Arnold Sailer, age 93 of Bismarck, ND, died Friday, December 1 st , 2017 at the Baptist Health Care Center in Bismarck, with his family by his side. Arnie passed away peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus after a four-month battle with cancer.  Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 5 th at Bismarck Baptist Church, 2211 Laforest Ave., with Pastor Merle Hoots officiating.  Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.  Visitation will be held Tuesday, one hour prior to time of service at the church.

Arnold "Arnie" Wilbert Sailer was born January 19, 1924 in Grant County, North Dakota, to Karl G. & Mary (Wiege) Sailer.  He attended rural school until the 8 th grade when his father died unexpectedly.  Arnie and his family moved to Hebron, ND where he attended Hebron High School.  He met the love of his life, Viola Fehr, at church and they were married July 22, 1946 at the First Baptist Church of Hebron.

In 1953, they moved to Tioga, ND.  Tioga was experiencing their first oil boom and the town was filling up with young families.  Arnie became involved in the community and in the First Baptist Church of Tioga. He loved to sing and sang in the church choir and in special music groups . He served as Sunday School secretary and trustee of the church for over thirty years. He played the piano and guitar "by ear".  He was a faithful and devoted servant of our Lord Jesus Christ. Arnie worked for 36 years at Heinle Pharmacy with his brother-in-law, Dutch Heinle.  He enjoyed the day to day meetings with people and was always so friendly to everyone.

In 1989, Arnie and Vi retired and moved to Bismarck to be closer to family.  In their retirement years, they took bus trips and car trips throughout the United States and enjoyed spending that time together.

There were many other things Arnie loved; one of those being his love for the land. He was often found hunting, fishing or taking drives to see the crops.  He enjoyed every sporting activity life offered him. He was an avid golfer and even scored a hole in one twice in his lifetime. A favorite memory of his was a special golfing trip to Nevada with his two grandsons and son-in-law. He still beat them every round at age 86!  Whether it was baseball or bowling, croquet or ping pong, he showed us all what true athleticism looked like. Another favorite activity of Arnie's was watching his three grandchildren compete in high school/college sports. He followed them to every game. This brought him great joy and pride. He even had the opportunity to watch his great-grandchildren play many games of basketball, football, volleyball and baseball. He was their #1 fan and always will be.  Arnie also loved to listen to his family sing at special events.

Arnie will be remembered for his funny sense of humor, quick wit, charming personality and most importantly his kindness to all who knew him. He had a will to live and loved every moment of each day.  He missed his wife, Vi, who passed away in May 2014 and he is now with her in a grand reunion in heaven.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah & Duane Grubb of Bismarck; three grandchildren, Nathan (Andrea) Grubb and their children, Brittan, Aaron, Reagan, & Macy of Mandan, ND, Eric (Shawna) Grubb and their children, Leila & Sawyer of Bismarck, & Kendra (Andy) Bachmeier and their children, Cambria, Will, & Greta of Bismarck;  one sister, Mildred Roth of New Salem;  one sister-in-law, Irene Heinle of Bismarck;  and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers (Harry, Lawrence, & Ray), one sister (Gertie), and several brothers & sisters-in-law.
