Arnold "Arnie" J. Schafer, 93, formerly of Underwood, ND died February 22, 2022 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, ND. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 9, 2022 at the Bismarck Funeral Home Chapel, Bismarck.  A private family interment will be held in the Underwood Cemetery.  The memorial service will be livestreamed at the bottom of his obituary on this page.

Arnold was born December 8, 1928 in Underwood, ND the son of Albert and Louise (Frey) Schafer.  He was raised and educated SW of Underwood.  He married Gretchen Lahren on October 23, 1953 in Underwood.  They farmed SW of Underwood for more than 60 years.

He enjoyed hunting and ice fishing.  Arnold also enjoyed attending auction sales, livestock sales and gun shows where he could visit with his neighbors and many friends.

Arnie is survived by his children, Monty (June) Schafer, Marty Schafer, Macy Schafer and Mary Conlon, his two grandchildren, Hailey Schafer (Lachlan Fithian-Zurn) and Jamie Conlon and a great granddaughter, Brynley Fithian-Zurn and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gretchen in 2021; an infant daughter, Jamie Marvel Schafer; three brothers, Roger, Melvin and Bennie and two sisters, Marion and Esther.
