Arlo was born on July 14, 1925 in the home on the family farmstead to Frank & Anna (Schultz) Voth. He married Freda Walcker on December 18, 1949. They moved to the family farm and soon experienced the new world of electricity and indoor plumbing which made their lives a lot easier. They worked together and raised 4 children, making a living farming the land and by milking cows, raising beef, hogs, sheep, chickens and a variety of different animals and birds. Arlo drove school bus for a number of years for the Turtle Lake Public School. His son, Bob, began farming with him in the mid-70's. Arlo drove truck and worked for Lindteigen Construction from 1980-2001. After selling the farm to Bob in 1993, Arlo and Freda moved to their second house in Turtle Lake.
Arlo attended Palmberg Country School through the 6th grade. Doing farm work was more important and fun than doing school work. The farm was his school and taught him how to fix machinery and anything else that needed repairing. He tried to instill in his boys "GPS" before there ever was "GPS". He wanted his seeded fields to be straight, when you cultivate it should be straight, when you swath the windrow should be straight, when you plant or fix fence it needs to be straight (we were never straight enough). Arlo enjoyed helping people without expecting anything in return. He loved gardening, putting up Christmas lights, bowling, working with wood, horseshoes and socializing with friends. Arlo was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, ND. Arlo stated that one of his last wishes was to be buried next to his brother Lynn, saying, "we grew up together, played together, and farmed together, we should be laid to rest together".
Arlo was diagnosed with cancer in November, 2013. God allowed him to live one more year through the care that he received from his doctors, nurses, chemo treatments and by the prayers of many people. He really came to value and appreciate his family, grandkids and friends, especially Bennie and Vicky Schmidt and Bob Hayes, this past year. He will be missed in many ways. God bless the memory of Arlo Voth.
