The funeral service of Amanda will be livestreamed at the bottom of her obituary on this page.

Amanda (Laib) Thyberg, age 103, passed away peacefully at her home in Washburn on Sunday, February 13, 2022.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 21, 2022 at First Lutheran Church, Washburn.  Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM all at the church in Washburn.  Interment will be held in the Birka Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Alma Amanda Laib was born at home September 4, 1918, and raised on her parents' farm one and a half miles northwest of Falkirk, North Dakota, the current location of Great River Energy's ball diamond. She was the fifth of five children born to John and Lydia (Hartman) Laib. She was confirmed in the Washburn Lutheran Church November 27, 1932. She attended Buffalo Lake country school grades 1-8. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1936, staying with "Gramma Peterson" in Washburn during her four years of high school.  After high school, she worked as a waitress at Hoffman's Cafe in Washburn and briefly at the McLean County Courthouse.  She played second base on the Falkirk Girls Kittenball (softball) team, which for three years won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in McLean County. While playing on the team, she met her future husband, Marvelin "Marvin" Thyberg, in 1936. Marvin and Amanda were married December 5, 1938, at the Underwood Lutheran Church parsonage. They rented and lived on two different farms before in 1943 renting and eventually in 1950 buying the Thyberg homeplace 15 miles west of Washburn. Together they had two children, Michael Marvelin and Perry Dene.  After marriage, Amanda was a member of Birka Lutheran west of Washburn. She was very active in the LCW ladies group, helping to make many quilts which were sent overseas.

Amanda worked on the farm side by side with her husband for 35 years before his death October 13, 1974. Being raised on a farm enabled her to shock grain, milk cows, drive horses and tractors and ably run different farm implements. She was renowned and envied by neighbors for stacking near perfect haystacks. Other farmers wanted to hire her to stack their hay. In the late 1970s she moved from the farm into Washburn and took care of her ailing 94-year-old mother. She loved working outdoors and every fall continued to go out to the farm during harvest and ride the combine for a while even at the age of 101. Over the years she loved baking, especially enjoying baking bread. Her grandkids have very fond memories of her cinnamon and caramel rolls. She was always actively involved in family, church and community gettogethers.  Amanda enjoyed visiting her family in Tennessee and in later years took part in two bible studies at First Lutheran Church.

Amanda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marvelin; and brother Ted Laib, twin brother and sister Helmuth Laib and Erna Petersen, and sister Viola Tatrow.

She is survived by her son Mike of Washburn; daughter Perry (David) Riden of Riceville, TN; six grandchildren: Tanna (Erik) Wagner of Douglassville, PA; Todd (Laura) Thyberg of Minneapolis, MN; Travis Thyberg of Silver Spring, MD; Chad Riden of Nashville, TN; Kirk (Erin) Riden of Oak Ridge, TN; Eric Riden of Riceville, TN; five greatgrandchildren: Andrew (Taylor) Wagner, Alexandra "Allie" Wagner (Jason Burke), Callia Riden, Elliot Riden and Nolan Riden; two great-greatgrandchildren: Wyatt Wagner and Winnie Wagner; and many nieces and nephews.

Amanda was blessed to have always been strong and healthy and lived by herself until the time of her death.  She was also blessed to have many friends and relatives who checked in on her, ran errands, brought her meals and let her know how loved she was.  When asked the secret of her longevity, Amanda credited her faith in The Lord and giving thanks every day for her many blessings.
