Obituary

Allan Sondrol, age 75 of Turtle Lake, ND, died Sunday, February 10, 2008 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Turtle Lake.

Allan B. Sondrol was born February 21, 1932 at rural Mercer, ND, the son to Ernest K. Sondrol & Olive E. Sigmund. In 1936, his family moved to Chicago, IL where he attended elementary school. He and his family returned to the Turtle Lake area in 1944 and resided on the Knute Sondrol farm. Allan graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Sept. 28, 1951 and attended boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. He was stationed at Norfolk, VA and Miami, FL. Allan served on a L.S.M. 297 Naval ship for three years and nine months. He was honorably discharged as an Electrician Mate 2nd Class on September 22, 1955. Following his discharge, Allan continued his education at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton and earned an associate degree in electrical systems. Upon his college graduation, he went to work for James Valley Co-op at Edgeley, ND for six months working as an assistant power usage technician. Allan married Marjorie Love on Sept. 8, 1956 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Turtle Lake. In 1958, they moved to Denver, CO where Allan was employed as a maintenance electrician with the Glen L. Martin Company. They moved to Minot, ND in 1960 where he worked as a journeyman electrician for Northwestern Electric. In 1962, he returned to Turtle Lake and opened an electrical shop, Sondrol Electric, which he owned and operated until 1971. Allan gained employment with the U.S. Corps of Engineers in 1971 and worked at the Garrison Dam Power Plant for 23 years. He retired as a senior electrician in 1995 and held a Master Electrician License for 35 years. Allan was a hobby farmer from 1978 to 1997. He served as President and sexton of the Turtle Lake Cemetery Board from 1996 to 2004. Allan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on the church council for several years, and a fifty-year member and past Commander of the Turtle Lake American Legion Post #133.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marjorie Sondrol of Turtle Lake; two sons, David Sondrol of Washburn, Daniel (Mona) Sondrol of Tranby, Norway; one daughter, Diane (David) Freborg of Turtle Lake; six grandchildren, Derek Johnson, Krystal (Paulino) DeJesus, Marissa Sondrol, Cody Sondrol, Austin Freborg, & Annika Sondrol; one great grandchild, Salina DeJesus; brothers, Kenneth (Marilyn) Sondrol of Turtle Lake, Elray (Lynette) Sondrol of Washburn, Clyde (Michele) Sondrol of Pick City; three sisters, Sharon Goehring of Turtle Lake, Vicki Sondrol of Bismarck, & Evon (Gordon) Nelson of Turtle Lake; one brother-in-law, Raymond Glover of Knoxville, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Allan was preceded in death by his parents, one sister (Deloris Glover), one brother-in-law (Leslie Goehring), and his in-laws (Orville & Mary Love).
