Alice, the daughter of Reinhold and Marie (Braun) Sackman, was born on January 4, 1929, rural Washburn. After finishing grade school in Veeder District country school, Alice graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1946. In September of that year, she moved to Washburn to begin working in the office of the McLean County Agent. The next year she began her career with the Farmers Home Administration for a total of 23 years, taking some time off to raise her family. She retired from FHA in January of 1989.
Alice met Jack Wiese on the day she moved to Washburn. Their first date was sharing a Coke at the Bluebird Café. On June 9, 1949, Alice and Jack were married at the Washburn United Methodist Church. Alice was a woman of strong faith and service to others. Alice has been an active member of the Church and its United Methodist Women organization, serving as Chairman of many of its committees through the years and serving as pianist for over 50 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star until the chapter at Washburn closed, and served as Worthy Matron, twice, and was secretary for 13 years. She was also honored with state offices and was a representative to Florida for two years. Alice was a lifetime member (76 years!) and a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, having joined in 1947. In 1996 Jack and Alice bought a winter home in Mesa, Arizona, and spent 10 winters there, where many strangers became new friends.
Alice was the heart of the home. She was a great cook, baker, and homemaker, and she always had a meal or treat to share when anyone visited. She and Jack were great hosts, and always made family and friends feel welcome. She was a natural teacher and taught her children to cook, as well as many other life lessons. She enjoyed sewing, cross-stitch, knitting, and all types of needlepoint. She had a sharp wit, and always had good advice to share.
Alice is survived by one daughter and son-in-law: Linda (Larry) Maslowski, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law: Gordon (Eileen) Wiese of Bismarck; and Bob (Jill) Wiese of Washburn; seven grandchildren: Nicki Maslowski, Bozeman MT; Seth (Amanda) Maslowski, West Fargo; Dave (Katie) Maslowski, Helena MT; Jennie Wiese, Detroit MI; Jessica Wiese, Bozeman MT; Ashley Wiese, Warrenton VA; and Kayla (Reid) Buckley, Washburn; two step grandchildren: Jim Nelson, Bismarck; and Libby (Matt) Hennessy, Bismarck; and great-grandchildren: Chloe Maslowski, Jack Maslowski, Luke Maslowski, Brooke Maslowski, Bridgette Nelson, Jake Were, Isabella Kirchoffner, and Lily Buckley; one sister, Janice Syverson, New Smyrna Beach FL; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Jack, her parents; her sisters: Helen Sackman, Violet Nelson, and Frances Kvamme, and her brother, Bert Sackman.
