Alice Hanson, 89, Bismarck, formerly of Turtle Lake, ND died Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at CHI St. Alexius, Turtle Lake. Cremation has taken place and a joint service with her husband Robert, who died May 16, 2020, will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at McCabe United Methodist Church in Bismarck, with burial to follow in the Turtle Lake Cemetery. Bob and Alice would have celebrated their 62 nd anniversary on that date.
Alice was born July 29, 1930 to John and Elma (Knutson) Busch in Underwood, ND. She graduated from Underwood High School in 1948 and went on to Taylor University in Indiana to earn her Bachelor's degree. She then taught home economics, English, and physical education in Washburn and Linton before returning to Indiana where she taught home economics in Kokomo, Indiana for four years. After her stint in Kokomo, Alice returned to North Dakota in 1958 and married her college classmate, Robert Hanson of Turtle Lake.
Alice and Bob farmed near Turtle Lake for almost 40 years, where they raised their four children, Pam, Dave, Dick, and Peggy. Alice was active in church and community affairs. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Turtle Lake, serving as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, chairman of the church board, church youth leader, Bible School teacher and coordinator, Turtle Lake Study Club Treasurer and President. She also served as an officer of the United Methodist Women at the local, district, and conference levels. Alice was a Boy Scout den mother, active in the American Cancer Society, and a charter member of the National Sunflower Promoters. She also continued teaching as a substitute at Turtle Lake-Mercer High School.
For hobbies, Alice enjoyed sewing, crafts, needlework, reading, and baking.
Alice and Bob retired from the farm in 1993, moved to Bismarck in 1996, and became members of McCabe United Methodist Church. Alice continued to volunteer in the community, she was an active member of the Bismarck Optimist Club, RSVP, and the Red Hat Society. Alice and Bob delivered meals on wheels, distributed flowers at the hospitals, and ushered at Civic Center events for many years. They also volunteered at Medora for many years.
Alice and Bob enjoyed traveling during their retirement, taking cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, and the New England Coast. They also enjoyed spending time in Arizona for several winters. They were season ticket holders for the Dakota Wizards basketball team for all the years the team was in Bismarck. They were avid fans of the Turtle Lake-Mercer Trojans and attended most of their grandchildren's games.
Alice was survived by her husband, Bob of Bismarck; and is survived by her children, Pam (Craig) Edson of Flagstaff, AZ, Dave (Kathy) Hanson of Turtle Lake, Dick (Karen) Hanson of Turtle Lake and Peggy (Jeff) Bridges of Billings, MT; her grandchildren, Ryan and Tanner Edson, Melissa (Tom) and Jennifer Hanson, Rachel (Trevor), Joshua and Jacob Hanson, Derek Sondrol, Jordyn (Grant) Singer, Onesti (Brett) Lapp, Taylor, Morgan and Shay Bridges; her four step-great- grandchildren; her brother, John Busch of Las Vegas and her brothers-in-law, Stan (Judy), Glenn (Monica) and Rod (Karen) Hanson and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Edward and Art and sisters Marty and Mabe.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to either the Turtle Lake Hospital Association or Turtle Lake Hospital swing bed program.
